ACADEMIC PATH

My academic path began at Politecnico di Milano in 2006, combining a bachelor and a master degree in Biomedical Engineering, with specialization in Electronics and Computer Science. My bachelor project was about a "smart" keyboard that re-arranged its keys to optimize user's writing speed. I was supervised by prof. Giuseppe Andreoni and (now dr.) Paolo Perego. The framework was a Brain-Computer-Interface device based on a SSVEP algorithm.

During my master degree I drifted away from Neuroscience, and peaked in the world of BioInformatics. Working with 3D maps produced by the coupling of liquid chromatography and mass-spectrometry gave me the chance to strengthen my Matlab skills. During this period I also spent some time with dr. Salvatore Cappadona in Uthrect, in the lab of prof. Albert Heck.

In 2012 I came back to Neuroscience, moving to Brussels to start a phd with prof. Etienne Olivier and dr. Alexander Zénon. During 5 years I investigated unconscious processes in the human brain, learning several techniques such as eye-tracking, EEG and more generally psychophysics. At the same time I got involved in few parallel projects, such as investigating chunking mechanisms during sequence learning (getting familiar with TMS and fMRI ) and the interaction between spatial attention and nociceptive stimuli (learning Bayesian psycophysics techniques). The "publications" section reflects this assortment.

Currently I'm a postdoc in the lab of Rufin VanRullen at CerCo, in Toulouse, and in the lab of Thomas Serre, at Brown University. Here I'm mostly involved in Computational Neuroscience and EEG, with increasingly frequent incursions in the Machine Learning kingdom. See the "CURRENT RESEARCH" section if you want to know more about my current research!

Besides studying, I spent most of my childhood and youth playing the classical guitar, competing in judo competitions and improving my street-dance skills. My brother and me started breakdancing when we were around 14 or so, and never stopped since then (more or less)..

I had the chance to teach breakdance from 2006 to 2011 in a couple of dance schools in Italy, mostly young kids from 5 to 18 years old. When I moved to Brussels for my phd, and to Toulouse for my postdoc, I kept training but stop teaching.

Here a video I realized during few training at PianoFabriek, during my Brussels time. Starring Oleg, me and few other bboys. Enjoy!

FUN FACTS

not sure it's really fun though...!
